Geodetic Institute Of Slovenia

Geodetic Institute of Slovenia is a leading Slovenian public institution for geodetic, geoinformatic, cartographic, cultural heritage, hydrographic research and development, established in 1953. GI plays a bridging role between public, private and research sectors, both nationally and internationally. In the field of cultural heritage, GI is measuring and archiving most important and protected cultural monuments on state level, regional and community level in Slovenia. GI is also processing all kind of imagery (remote sensing) - from satellite HRM, to aerial and dense laser point clouds coming from the national lidar coverage. Terrestrial imagery taken from ground points is also extensively used for the documentation of cultural heritage sites. GI is producing many 3D virtual models, 3D print models and augmented reality presentations on mobile phones. GI is a Slovenian representative in EU platform EuroSDR (European Spatial Data Research) and national contact point for land cover mapping.

Recently, GI is producing innovative geoservices, geodata and geovisualizations for as diverse themes as national statistics, cultural heritage, spatial indicators, smart cities, open data & reuse of data, e-content for education and for the blind people, e-health, e-tourism, GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives & museums), augmented reality for real estate data, space weather, demography, etc.

In cartography and mapping, GI holds three awards for “Excellence in Cartography” by the International Cartographic Association (ICA), for the best city plan (Ottawa, 1999), for the best tactile map for blind (Durban, 2003) and for the best topographic map (Paris, 2011) on the world. Maps and spatial data are digitally produced for web and multimedia products, satellite navigation on land, sea and air, for 3D/4D landscape visualization. Themes vary from topographic to tourist maps, and from mountaineering maps to aero/nautical charts produced in conformance with International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. GI is authorized to operate national spatial data infrastructure services such as supervision and improvement of data quality in real estate, distribution of precise GPS/GNSS data processed by the national reference stations network SIGNAL (Slovenia-Geodesy-NAvigation-Location), and dissemination of maritime hydrographic data.
