The Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici e per il Paesaggio (Commission for the Architectural and Landscape Heritage) for the Provinces of Florence, Pistoia and Prato is a peripheral organ of the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali (Ministry of Culture) with the institutional task of protecting, conserving and valorising the architectural and landscape heritage in the territory of competence.
This activity is performed pursuant to the Codice dei Beni Culturali e del Paesaggio (Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code, Legislative Decree 42/2004) within the ambit of the cultural heritage belonging to the State, the Regions, public bodies and institutions, as well as non-profit private legal entities and private owners.
The Soprintendenza has competence within the Provinces of Firenze, Pistoia e Prato comprising an artistic heritage of immense value. The Superintendence has an articulated activity that includes the knowledge of the architectural, historical, artistic and ethno-anthropological heritage, the declaration of its interest, the maintenance and restoration activities - or the control over such activities by third parties- and a very consistent activity of valorisation and management in connection with other public and private bodies.
Main activities are: the check of the cultural interest on real estate on the territory, the catalogue of the historical and artistic heritage, projects and cultural initiatives, the landscape protection. 
In addition, in order to promote the knowledge of the historical and the artistic heritage of the area, the Superintendence collaborates and promotes initiatives aimed at fostering public access to heritage, both through its Educational Service and through publications and projects.
